The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) released a letter commemorating the 49th Anniversary for Title IX with resources for schools to reference to avoid sexual discrimination.

Among the resources mentioned is the clarification of Title IX’s protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This public notice came out earlier this month following the Supreme Court’s decision of Bostock v. Clayton County that extended Title IX’s protections against discrimination to sexual orientation and gender identity.

The letter also includes supplementary information about how the COVID-19 Pandemic impacted students in education from OCR. Disparities based on sex, race, disability and other characteristics are addressed in the report.

As part of the letter, OCR offers additional information for LGBTQI+ student guidance as well as frequently asked questions about sex discrimination that may also be found on its updated website.

Should you have any questions about Title IX, or any other issue impacting schools, please do not hesitate to contact William J. Zee or any of the attorneys in the Appel, Yost & Zee Education group.
